HAZEL DRIVE FIRST FLOOR AND PRIMARY SUITE

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Historic Charm Meets Modern Family Life in Mt. Lebanon

When a young family purchased this historic Mt. Lebanon home, they fell in love with its charm and ideal location—just steps from schools, parks, and neighborhood coffee shops. However, the layout of the first floor and primary suite didn’t quite meet the needs of their modern, connected lifestyle. With the support of the homeowners, our team reimagined the flow of the home—eliminating the original center hall to create a larger, light-filled kitchen, widening the opening to the dining room, and reclaiming a captured back room to expand the living area. The result is an open, airy first floor where natural light pours in and the family can truly connect and grow.

The clients envisioned a light-hearted, happy home, and that spirit guided every design decision. A soft, playful palette and approachable materials define the space, starting in the kitchen, where the cabinetry and wall paneling are painted in “Reflections” by Sherwin Williams—a serene blue that feels both fresh and timeless. The backsplash continues in the same paneling, rather than tile, adding warmth and softness to the space. Taj Mahal quartzite further softens the perimeter countertops and the wall behind the range, while a custom worktable—topped with a crisp quartz surface—serves as the heart of the kitchen, where the family gathers for everyday meals.

A new, larger kitchen window brings in more natural light and proper proportion to the expanded space. Just off the kitchen, the breakfast room—with its original windows overlooking the backyard—was given new life with a full banquette upholstered in creamy vegan leather and accented with cozy throw pillows. Paired with a vintage table and chairs hand-selected by the client, this cheerful nook now hosts casual family meals and lively kids’ birthday parties alike.

The nearby powder room was reimagined with whimsy and elegance: a garden-inspired wallpaper, charming marble tile floor, and updated fittings create a space that feels special and unexpected.

Upstairs, the primary suite underwent a thoughtful reconfiguration. By borrowing space from the large bedroom, we were able to enlarge both the bathroom and the closet. The new bath features a wide oak double vanity, a built-in linen cabinet, and a soaking tub wrapped in Carrara marble and softened with a linen curtain. A large, existing window once posed a challenge for the new shower location—but it became an opportunity. In collaboration with William’s Stained Glass, the family used existing windows from the first floor to design a custom stained glass window that brings privacy, artistry, and light to the room.

This renovation honored the home’s history while opening it up to a vibrant, contemporary lifestyle—resulting in a joyful, connected space for a growing family.
