WOODHAVEN DRIVE LIVING ROOM

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This historic Tudor home featured an extraordinary collection of original architectural details, including richly crafted millwork, a dramatic beamed ceiling, and original stained glass. The client's vision was clear: create a design that celebrated and emphasized these remarkable existing features while preserving the home's character and history.

The design thoughtfully incorporated treasured antiques and sentimental pieces that reflected the family's story. The room had long been underutilized, serving primarily as a gathering space during holidays. The goal was to transform it into a welcoming, multifunctional environment that could be enjoyed every day.

The reimagined space now supports a variety of activities, from quiet mornings with coffee and books to evenings spent listening to music and enjoying drinks by the fireplace. Dedicated areas for work, reading, and displaying a growing collection of plants were carefully integrated without compromising the room's architectural integrity.

A central feature of the project was the complete renovation of the fireplace. The original fireplace was transformed with a new insert, custom tile surround, and meticulous carpentry detailing. Special care was taken to preserve and showcase the antique salvaged mantel, which was carefully restored and securely integrated into the new construction. The finished fireplace serves as both a functional gathering place and a focal point that reinforces the home's historic character.

Another key challenge was addressing the room's inadequate lighting. A dramatic two-tier chandelier was introduced as a focal point, complemented by thoughtfully placed wall lighting that enhances both the architecture and functionality of the space. These layered lighting elements bring depth, balance, and flexibility to the room while highlighting its historic details.

While rooted in traditional design, the interiors were refreshed with a lighter, brighter palette that brings new energy to the space. Custom draperies introduce beautiful pattern, color, and softness, framing the windows and drawing attention to the room's architectural character. A tailored settee provides additional seating while adding personality and visual interest. Layered textures, curated furnishings, and unique details create an inviting atmosphere that feels both timeless and personal.

The result is a distinctive room that honors the home's architectural heritage while transforming an infrequently used formal space into a vibrant destination for everyday living.
