ABOUT THE PROJECT

A powder room is one of the few truly self-contained spaces in a home, creating a rare opportunity for bold, highly personal design. Unlike other more public spaces in a home, the small private space is a destination rather than a daily living space for both homeowners and their guests.

This tradition has roots in 17th- and 18th-century France and England, when wealthy households often featured richly decorated private chambers known as cabinets or withdrawing rooms. These historic design practices established the idea that small, private rooms could be richly detailed and highly personal

Today's powder room is a modern interpretation of that tradition. It gives homeowners permission to express themselves with fun colors, dramatic patterns, and treasured collections.

This powder room design was inspired by a quick 36 hour stay at the Charlotte hotel in London, designed by renowned British designer, Kit Kemp. The room is anchored by Kit Kemp’s Robina Dinner Plate wallpaper by GP & J Baker and layered with gilded light fixtures, a boldly patterned mirror, classic natural stone, and a curated collection of dimensional artwork, including antique intaglios, a whimsical portrait of a black Labrador in a tuxedo, a nod to the homeowner’s beloved dog, Archie, and a pair of vintage equestrian prints found at a favorite local vintage shop, Foxglove Interiors. The frames are just as important as the artwork itself, adding depth, character, and a sense of collected history to the overall collection.

We planned the design to feel like a tiny museum, a space that appears thoughtfully collected over time, offering something quirky and unexpected for both family members and guests. We hoped for visitors to linger a little longer, taking in the details and leaving with a smile and something to chat about.

Our hope is that the powder room showcases the same thoughtful, collected approach found throughout the rest of the house, but in a concentrated dose of eclectic fun.
